The Chesapeake Bay Bearcats, a jazz band formerly fronted by Tommy Newsom and Pat Curtis, wraps up Blessed Sacrament’s 2012-2013 Concert Series this weekend.

You’re invited to this special event!

DATE:  Sunday, April 7th

WHERE: 6400 Newport Ave., Norfolk

Binturong, also known as a bearcat.

This bearcat doesn’t play jazz.

Now, about those bearcats — what are they, exactly?

A bearcat, also known as a binturong, is an Asian mammal that is neither a bear nor a cat. It hangs out in the trees in places like China, India, Indonesia, and the Philippines. For more information — and to find out if a binturong would dine on you, given the chance — visit the Virginia Zoo and get to know the bearcats living in downtown Norfolk.

Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Norfolk closes out its 2011-2012 Concert Series with a performance by vocalist Norma Bass on Sunday, April 15th at 4:00 PM.

“A definite “not-to-miss” experience, Miss Bass performs a variety of music including selections by Ella Fitzgerald.”

Writing for Portfolio Weekly, Jim Newsom had this to say about Miss Bass:
“Two years ago, the city of Norfolk launched its Legends of Music Walk of Fame by naming [Ella Fitzgerald] among its first class of inductees. At the awards ceremony in September, 2002, a local singer named Norma Bass filled in for the late Ms. Fitzgerald. When the curtain opened on Ms. Bass, the audience gasped. She looked just like Ella. After she sang a couple of Ella’s signature tunes, the packed house at the Roper gave her a rousing ovation. She had the look, she had the sound. Norma Bass was Ella Fitzgerald.”

This performance is free and open to the public. Bring your family and friends (but leave the fur-babies at home.) Refreshments will be served in the Social Hall following the performance.

Whether you’re a jazz enthusiast or an oenophile, you’ll want to make tracks to The Art of Jazz and The Fine Art of Wine this Wednesday night from 6 – 9 PM in Huber Court.  Admission is free; museum members receive discounts on glasses of wine.

Get there early to claim a table for your group – seats fill up fast!  You can also browse the galleries during the performance, enjoying the music as it travels with you.  (Fun tip:  Some works in the upper gallery were inspired by performers in jazz clubs – see if you can find them.)
